This course will examine the historical background, cultural context, and theological contribution of the Gospels and Acts. It provides an introduction to the timelines, authorship, contents and main themes of each covered NT writing. One aspect of this course is the harmony yet uniqueness of the three synoptic gospels in contrast to the uniqueness of the gospel of John. The second and major aspect of this survey emphasizes the book of Acts which chronicles the birth and growth of the NT church from its inception in Jerusalem through its expansion and establishment throughout the Roman Empire under the guidance to the Holy Spirit through the ministries of the apostles. As such, this portion of the class provides the context and dating for many of the early church controversies and many of the NT epistles.
